Artistic projects

Doppelgänger

The DOPPELGÄNGER series is a four-year international commissioning project that pairs world premieres from four renowned composers - Bent Sørensen, Lotta Wennäkoski, Anna Thorvaldsdottir, and Thomas Adès - with late major chamber works by Schubert. Each season, we perform a world premiere on a program with its doppelgänger - the Schubert quartet or quintet that inspired it - culminating in 2024 in the premiere of a quintet by Adès, after the String Quintet in C major. This season’s new work, by Anna Thorvaldsdottir, premieres in April 2023 and is paired with Schubert’s String Quartet in A Minor, "Rosamunde." The DOPPELGÄNGER pieces are commissioned with the support of Carnegie Hall, Cal Performances, UC Santa Barbara Arts & Lectures, Vancouver Recital Society, Flagey in Brussels, and Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam.

Prism

The Danish String Quartet’s Grammy-nominated Prism project links Bach fugues, late Beethoven quartets and works by modern masters.

A beam of music is split through Beethoven’s prism. The important thing to us is that these connections be experienced widely. We hope the listener will join us in the wonder of thee beams of music that travel all the way from Bach through Beethoven to our own times.” Recorded in historic Reitstadel Neumarkt and produced by Manfred Eicher, the albums are issued as the Danish String Quartet embarks on a tour with dates on both sides of the Atlantic, climaxing with a run of Prism concerts.
